CLOUDFORESTS ENDURANCE TEAM

The Cloudforests Endurance Team was formed in March 2021. The aim of the project was to promote climate awareness through sport, especially cycling. The Team has a clear focus on competing in some of the toughest Endurance events and documenting how climate change is impacting the places they travel through. The team is more about promoting a new type of culture in cycling rather than being focused on results and is trying to get the word out about being healthy and encouraging others to get on a bike.

In 2022 the team will expand taking on some new and exciting riders while also increasing its social media posting which will include more blog and video content. They will also help promote the Cloudforest brand around the country and further afield. The partnership between the Team and Cloudforests is a match made in heaven as both want to help our world for future generations.

Paul Caldwell in action for The End Team

Paul Caldwell

Paul Caldwell is a cyclist who has competed in many cycling disciplines throughout the years. He has had major success at a national level particularly in Mountain Biking which peaked with claiming the Masters National Marathon Championships in 2017. He has now turned his focus to Endurance and Ultra Cycling as he feels this is the discipline he enjoys the most. Since doing so, he has set records on some of Ireland's toughest Off-Road routes.

In 2021 Paul took part and won the Wild Mayo Ultra 650 race and also completed the entire Wicklow Way out and back in the fastest known time of 20 hours unsupported. Whilst in 2020 he was the first person to ride off-road from Cork to Cavan on the Beara Breffini Way which he completed in 3 days and 14 hours.

In 2022 Paul plans to take on the challenge of one of the world’s toughest backcountry routes, The Highland Trail 550 in Scotland. This will take him through the Scottish Highlands being completely self-sufficient and racing others non-stop on his mountain bike. This challenge will be the toughest he has had to face until now but he is looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Ruth out on the trails

Ruth Brooks

Ruth's cycling journey didn't begin until late 2016 when a friend took her mountain biking and she was instantly hooked. However, even before this she had an impressive background in other sports such as Aerial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

She quickly progressed to racing both Endurance and Downhill disciplines, with a preference for Downhill, which involves getting a lift to the top of the mountain and cycling down it.

Then, in early 2020, Ruth bought a gravel bike and started exploring her local forests, canal paths, and boreens. This unexpected love for pedaling, combined with her off-road cycling skills led to Ruth competing and excelling in several endurance gravel events in 2021. It soon became clear that endurance/ultra-cycling is where her heart was.

Ruth's cycling plans for 2022 include endurance events and ultras (both on and off-road), a few sportives for fun, lots of adventure spins exploring off the beaten track, plus preparation for a very daunting cycling challenge in 2023.
