Cloudforests Secures Full Technical Approval for Native Woodland at Querrin, County Clare
We’re proud to announce a major milestone for Cloudforests: full technical approval has been granted to establish a new native Irish woodland at Querrin, County Clare — the future home of Cloudforest Six.
This marks another step forward in our mission to restore Ireland’s native forests while connecting people to meaningful climate action.
A Landscape Rooted in History
Querrin, located on the Loop Head Peninsula in West Clare, is a place of quiet beauty — but also one shaped by profound history.
During the Great Famine (1845–1852), this region, like much of rural Ireland, experienced devastating loss. Families were forced to leave the land, and entire communities were scattered across the globe. Many of those who departed from West Clare made their way to the United States, becoming part of the vast Irish diaspora that shaped cities like Boston and New York.
Today, the land at Querrin carries that legacy — a landscape once marked by hardship, now offering an opportunity for regeneration, resilience, and renewal.
Restoring Native Irish Woodland
At Cloudforest Six, we aim to plant up to 10,000 native Irish trees, carefully selected to reflect the natural ecology of the region.
Species will include:
Oak
Birch
Rowan
Alder
Scots Pine
Hazel
This is not commercial forestry — it is true native woodland restoration, designed to:
Support biodiversity
Capture carbon naturally
Improve soil and water quality
Reconnect people with nature
Each tree planted contributes to rebuilding Ireland’s lost forest heritage.
Why Querrin Matters
West Clare’s Atlantic climate and rich soils make it an ideal location for native woodland regeneration. Yet, like much of Ireland, forest cover here has historically been low.
By establishing Cloudforest Six in Querrin, we are:
Reviving a landscape that has been largely treeless for generations
Creating a long-term ecological asset
Honouring the history of those who once lived and worked this land
There’s something deeply meaningful about planting trees in a place where so many once had to leave.
